Florida

Florida is a state situated in the south-eastern United States with a population of around 18.1 million people.

Florida

The majority of the state comprises of a large peninsula, with the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It shares northern borders with the states of Georgia and Alabama. The state's capital is Tallahassee, with Miami its major cultural and population centre.

Tourism comprises the largest part of the state's economy. Warm weather, miles of sandy beaches and internationally famous amusement parks, including Disney World, Universal Orlando, Busch Gardens and SeaWorld, are among the attractions that bring 60 million tourists to the state every year.

Agriculture, especially the production of citrus fruits, also forms a major part of the economy. Sugarcane and celery are also two widely grown products.

A sizeable part of the US's aerospace industry is also based at Cape Canaveral in Florida.

Traditionally a Democrat state, explosive population growth in recent years has brought a large number of Republicans and Cubans to Florida and this has now given the right-wing Republicans a slight edge.

Florida was inhabited for thousands of years before the arrival of the Europeans settlers, archaeological research indicates. Juan Ponce de Leon, a Spanish conquistador, is credited with being the first European to land at Florida on April 2nd, 1513 and he was the man to gave the state its name, after a Spanish term for the Easter season Pascua de Florida.

Reports indicate that he may not have been the first European to land there however, as one Indian that he encountered upon arrival could already speak Spanish.

The northern part of Florida has a warm temperate climate, while the southern part of the peninsula enjoys a subtropical climate. The peak season is in the winter, when the temperatures are warm and there is little humidity.
