TURKEY AIMS TO BOOST DOMESTIC TOURISM

Foreign investors who own Turkish rental properties could soon see more demand from the country's resident population.

Basaran Ulosoy, chairman of the Turkish Association of Travel Agents, said the country is currently aiming to attract a greater number of foreign visitors.

However, he told Today's Zaman that efforts to boost the holiday industry could also have an effect on Turkish residents.

Mr Ulosoy said he was aiming to have about 21 million people enjoying the country's domestic attractions within the next 15 years.

He commented: "Foreigners should not be the only ones experiencing Turkey.

"Turkish citizens, too, should see their country."

This suggests that rental investors in popular tourist hotspots could potentially benefit from both foreign and homegrown tenants.

As a result, an investment in an area with lots of tourist attractions could prove to be highly lucrative.

Today's Zaman recently reported that during 2007, about £1.5 billion worth of property was bought by foreign investors.
