RECESSION FEARS 'NOT DENTING TURKISH TOURISM'
Monday, 10 Mar 2008
Tourism in Turkey is not being negatively affected by global economic problems, according to a leading official.
Murat Dedeman, head of the Turkish Tourism Investors Association, said the country is still attracting a healthy number of foreign visitors, despite concerns over a possible worldwide recession.
In fact, he was quoted by the Guardian as saying that the number of leisure travellers is likely to rise by 12 per cent this year.
This is good news for overseas property investors who have entered the Turkish market, particularly those in the buy-to-let sector.
Mr Dedeman commented: "Holidays have become a necessity for people.
"If they spent four days on holiday in the past, then they trim this to three days but they will still take holidays."
He added that tourism is the sector that is least likely to be affected by a global recession.
This concurs with the view of Ian Bradley from the Association of Independent Tour Operators, who recently told the Guardian that economic problems such as the credit crunch are not unduly affecting the travel industry.
