What to See in Antalya

The “Antalya Muzesi” is Turkey’s best museum, and one of the world’s leading archaeology museums. Its exhibits include Turkish crafts and costumes, and artifacts from the Greek and Roman eras. There is an open-air sculpture gallery and a section featuring prehistoric fossils and human remains. It is the only Turkish museum with a special children’s section.

Karaalioglan Park provides a fabulously shady pitstop. A traditional park with trees and benches, the park offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean. It contains its own piece of history in the form of a 49-foot stone tower believed to have its origins in the 2nd century AD.

The “Kaleici”, or Old Town, is that part of Antalya that lies within the ancient fortified city walls. It provides one of Turkey’s finest examples of an Ottoman neighbourhood. Many of its houses have been restored and converted into tourist establishments - hotels, restaurants, shops and art galleries. Indeed, this restoration effort was awarded the Golden Apple Prize.

The main entrance to Kaleici is at Hadrian’s Gate, an impressively decorated triple-arched structure built in AD 130. The Old Town’s cobbled streets are the very same surfaces that once bore ancient carts to and fro.

The atmospheric harbour forms part of the Old Town. It has retained its traditionally bustling character, and is filled with yachts, fishing boats and tourist-expedition boats.

The “Saat Kulesi” (Clock Tower) marks the interface between the Old Town and the newer part of the city. This junction is known to the locals as Kalekapisi.

Directly behind the Clock Tower lies the Tekeli Mehmet Pasa Cami, an Ottoman mosque dating back to the 16th century.

Yivli Minaret was built by the Seljuks in the 13th century. With its distinctive blue and turquoise tiles, the minaret came to be the symbol of the city.
