The town’s magnificent Kale (citadel) dominates every view. It is appropriately perched on a massive crag and surrounded by a 7 km long defensive wall. Via a short tunnel, one passes through these walls and into a second walled perimeter, the Ic Kale (inner fortress). A little further into the old city, one encounters a third wall and ticket office selling admission to the Keep. It contains the ruins of a Byzantine church. It is also believed that Keyubad kept a palace here.
The Kizil Kule provides a fine example of Mediterranean military architecture. Built by the Seljuks in 1225 to defend the town’s harbour, the 100-foot high tower today houses an interesting ethnographic museum.
Alanya Muzesi (Alanya Museum) features a variety of exhibits, but is best known for its perfectly preserved Roman bronze statue of a formidable Hercules from the 2nd century AD.
