What to See and Do in Bodrum

The Petronia (Castle of St. Peter) is Bodrum’s foremost historical site and a fine example of medieval military architecture. The castle was built by the European crusaders - known as the Knights of St. John - in 1402. The castle features magnificent gardens, while its five turrets are named after the home countries of the Knights - England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. The castle also contains the well-known Museum of Underwater Archaeology. On exhibit are items recovered from shipwrecks discovered off the Aegean coast.

The painstakingly restored Bodrum Amphitheatre today hosts the September Festival. Construction of the building commenced under Mausolus, and had a capacity of 13 000.

Myndos Gate, also dating back to the reign of Mausolus, was built in 364 BC. It is the most substantial remnant of the original city wall.

The Ottoman Tower was built in 1794 to protect an Ottoman shipyard against pirate raids. It, too, has undergone recent restoration.

The Zeki Muren Museum is something like Graceland. The last home of Turkey’s once favourite singer, the museum offers interesting insights into the Turkish music scene of the past and present.

Two aqua parks have been recently opened in Bodrum. The Dedeman Aqua Park is on the road to Ortakent and the other is next to the TMT Hotel.

The camel fight is Turkey’s answer to the bull fight. Unlike the sometimes bloody bull fight, the camel fight is a competition of strength - the winner is the camel that holds down its opponent the longest. Camel fights generally take place during winter.
