Turkey

The Republic of Turkey is a Eurasian country, stretching across the Anatolian peninsular, with a population of 72.6 million people.

Turkey

It shares borders with eight other countries; including Bulgaria to the north-west, Georgia to the north-east, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Greece to the west, Iraq and Syria to the south-east and Iran to the east.

The country has coastlines on the Mediterranean Sea to the south, the Aegean Sea to the west and the Black Sea to the north - and it also contains the Sea of Marmara, which is used by geographers as a dividing line between Europe and Asia.

Turkey has the 17th highest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the world and is a member of the G20 - a grouping of the globe's 20 largest economies. The service sector accounts for around 64.5 per cent of GDP, the industrial sector around 23.7 per cent and the agricultural sector approximately 11.9 per cent.

The tourism sector, which has grown exponentially in recent years, also contributes significantly to the economy.

The world's 37th largest country, Turkey generally enjoys a Mediterranean temperate climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet and cold winters. Conditions can be far more extreme in the country's arid interior.

Turkey has a number of international airports, the main ones being at Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir and Sabiha Gokcen - which is 40 kilometres from Istanbul on the Asian side. The country also has a number of ports and a rail journey from London to Istanbul typically takes three days, taking in the Paris, Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest on the way.
