History of Yalikavak
Yalikavak’s history is as old as that of Bodrum, and is believed to go back as early as 2000 BC. It is also believed that the site was occupied by a Lelegian settlement in around 700 BC. They left their mark by way of rock-cut tombs on Yalikavak’s hills. The city of Ouranium was also once established here.
The seas around Yalikavak have also proved to be rich with history. Several famous shipwrecks have been discovered here, including the “African Child” and the “Gelidonia”. Some of their recovered pieces are on display in the Bodrum Underwater Museum.
