History of Bodrum
Originally called Halicarnassus, Bodrum was founded around 1000 BC, and was one of the first Greek colonies in Asia.
Bodrum reached its prime under King Mausolus, who governed from 377 BC to 383 BC. He was succeeded by his wife, Artemisia, who ordered the construction of a commemorative white marble tomb for Mausolus. (The origin of the modern English word, “mausoleum”, is pretty obvious!). The creation appeared on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World list. Crowned with an intimidating statue of Mausolus and Artemisia riding a chariot, the tomb has since been dismantled, although the site may be visited.
