History of Antalya
Antalya’s ancient name is Pamphylia, “the land of all tribes”. The region’s history, comprising a succession of settlements, has rendered this title most appropriate.
The area has its origin in the 1st century BC, when King Attalus ordered his men to find “heaven on earth”. After a protracted, worldwide search, they came upon Antalya. The city was founded and named Attaleia.
The territory was subsequently occupied by several civilizations. The Roman settlers transformed it into an outstanding city that was honoured by the great Roman Emperor, Hadrian. The Romans were succeeded by the Byzantines, and they in turn by the Seljuk Turks in 1207. The Ottoman settlers established Antalya as a Turkish city and a key port. Its growth has never ceased.
