Bodrum
Bodrum is an attractive port in south-western Turkey and is a very popular tourist resort with northern Europeans because of its beauty, warm climate and exciting nightlife.
Poets, singers and artists all have taken up residence in this perfect harbour location - and tourists from all over the world flock to see one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus.
The tomb, which is the origin of the word mausoleum, has now been reduced mainly to rubble - but it originally stood around 45 metres tall, with each of its four sides adorned with sculptural reliefs.
The town centre now hosts many harbour-side bars, restaurants and a plethora of historical sites - and if tourists wish to leave its boundaries for a while, unspoiled countryside with traditional villages and isolated beaches is only ten minutes away.
