The Kingdom of Spain is a major European nation with a population of around 40.5 million people.
The country is located in southern Europe and takes up the majority of the Iberian peninsular, sharing this land mass with Andorra and Portugal. It also has two small enclaves in North Africa, both bordering Morocco. It shares land borders with France, Portugal, Gibraltar and Andorra.
It borders the Mediterranean Sea to the south and east, the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Bay of Biscay to the north.
Spain is a developed country and has the eighth largest economy in the world and the fifth biggest in Europe. In recent years, its economy has been regarded as one of the most dynamic in the EU and has attracted significant amounts of foreign investment. Over the last 40 years, its tourism industry has grown to be the second largest in the world.
Weak points in the Spanish economy include low spending on research and development, high inflation, low productivity and a large underground economy.
Spain is a democratic country with its political system organised in the form of a constitutional monarchy. It has a hereditary monarch and a bicameral parliament. Many regard it as the most decentralised country in Europe - with some of its 17 territories managing their own public finances and all looking after their own health and education systems.
Spain is extremely hot during the mid-summer, in July and August. During the rest of the year, the climate is generally temperate in the north and warm in the south.
A wide range of flights are available to and from differing location in the UK to all over Spain. A rail journey from London Waterloo to Madrid will take around 16 hours on average.
