Romania

Romania is a country located in south-eastern Europe with a population of approximately 22.275 million people - the seventh largest in the EU.

Romania

The country shares borders with Ukraine and Moldova to the north-east, Hungary and Serbia to the west and Bulgaria to the south. It has coastline along the Black Sea, while the eastern and southern Carpathian Mountains run through its centre.

Present day Romania was formed in 1918, when the previously conjoined principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia united with Transylvania. Its capital, Bucharest, is the sixth largest city in the EU.

Since a decade of decline in the ten years following the overthrow of the country's Communist regime in late 1989, the country has enjoyed economic stability, characterised by low unemployment, high growth (7.7 per cent in 2006) and declining inflation. Exports, including, clothing and textiles, industrial and agricultural machinery, electrical equipment, software and metallurgic products, have increased significantly in recent years - but the country still has a large trade deficit, importing 37 per cent more goods than it exports.

Romania is a semi-presidential democratic republic, with executive functions shared between the president and prime minister. The president is elected by popular vote and the prime minister is almost always head of the party that forms the majority in the country's parliament.

The country has a temperate climate. It has relatively cold, cloudy winters with frequent snow and fog - and enjoys sunny summers with showers and thunderstorms occurring often.

Flights to Romania are relatively easy to find since the advent of the budget airline phenomenon - and it is also possible to travel to the eastern European nation by rail and of course automobile.
