PORTUGAL 'A POPULAR DESTINATION FOR SECOND HOME SEEKERS'

Portugal is a popular destination among those seeking a second home abroad, one expert has said.

Rhiannon Williamson, the director of ShelterOffshore.com, said that Portugal is popular with "lifestyle buyers" who want a better quality and more affordable way of life.

She cited the latest NatWest International Personal Banking quality of life report that revealed 90 per cent of expatriates - some of whom have bought a property in Portugal - say they are financially better off living overseas.

"Portugal is more popular with those seeking a home, second home or retirement property abroad rather than those simply looking for real estate assets for investment purposes," she stated.

"The prospect of enjoying a better quality of life in Portugal is a driving factor behind its popularity."

Portugal's climate, people, landscape, wildlife, cuisine, overall safety, low crime rates, economic stability and property prices are all contributing factors, she added.

According to NatWest's study, as many as 3.3 million Britons may be enjoying the final decades of their life in a foreign country by 2050.
