Casa da Alfandega marks the site of the first African slave market in Europe. Built in 1445, the building now contains an art gallery with changing exhibits, and sometimes hosts concerts and theatre productions.
Castelo das Governadores (Governor’s Palace) is the castle from which Dom Sebastiao is believed to have addressed his troops before setting out on the calamitous crusade of 1578. Most of the palace is long gone, but the section of wall with the famous window of address ironically remains.
