Alvor’s history is superbly visible. The Pariah Church, originally built in the 16th century and rebuilt after the great 1755 earthquake, contains in its main doorway a superb sample of the Manueline era of architecture.
The 16th century Igreja Matriz provides another example of the Manueline style. Its arches, pillars and doors have been meticulously carved into the shapes of fishing ropes and plants.
The Marabout Chapels of Sao Joao and Sao Pedro (St. John and St. Peter), with their cubic structures and spherical cupolas, show to remarkable effect the Moorish architectural influence.
The town’s ancient castle was destroyed in the earthquake, barring two stretches of wall that were once part of the fortress. There is a beautiful playground here to keep the kids entertained.
The harbour, with its colourful fishing boats, is a visual delight. It also has several good fish restaurants.
The Ria Alvor is a vast estuary and the chosen nesting place of dozens of species of migratory birds. The marshes are also home to an interesting variety of animal life. Exploration boats can be hired in Alvor.
