The easiest way to enter the Algarve is by air. All international and domestic flights enter the region via Faro Airport. Flights to Faro are available from almost all the major European cities. Within Portugal, TAP Air Portugal offers regular daily flights from Lisbon and Porto. The flying times are 45 and 90 minutes respectively.
The Algarve is also accessible by road, either from Huelva, Spain via the N431 or from Via do Infante, Portugal via the A22.
Between mid-May and the end of October, the visitor may take advantage of a free Aerobus service from Faro Airport to the town centre. This is supported by train, bus and taxi services. The Algarve’s main roads - the N125 and the IP1/E1 - and its train line - connect towns and villages along the entire coast.
TRAINS
A train service runs from Vila Real de Santo Antonio in the east to Lagos in the west. It is a fairly cheap means of sightseeing, but not the quickest.
BUSES
The state-owned bus service, Rodoviara National, covers the entire region. Once again, fares are relatively cheap. Private bus companies also exist. These require advance bookings.
TAXIS
There is no shortage of taxis in the Algarve’s towns and resorts. Their cream colour makes them easily identifiable (the older taxis are black with green roofs). One can simply hop aboard, New York-style, while longer journeys can be arranged in advance.
Those who choose to hire a car will find the road signage system easy to use and their destination easy to reach.
