The Algarve
The southernmost region of Portugal, the Algarve is world famous for its sun, sandy beaches and golf. Indeed, with an average of 3000 daylight hours a year, the Algarve is Portugal’s tourist drawcard. The region measures 40 km north to south. Its mountain-bordered situation renders it the warmest part of the country in winter and a hot holidaying destination in the summer.
The Algarve may be divided into four sub-regions:
• Faro, the Algarve’s capital
• The eastern section stretching as far as the border town, Vila
Real de Santo Antonio
• The area from Faro west to Portimao is the most developed
region, with the most to offer holidaymakers
• The fourth section includes Lagos and extends to Sagres and
Cabo Sao Vicente
Every region, and every town and village, has its own distinct character.
The significant development the Algarve has undergone during the last 20 years has added to its natural appeal a range of urban attractions like night clubs, restaurants and bars. Such growth has been associated with a conspicuous increase in foreign property ownership. With minimal restrictions on owning property, UK nationals form the largest expatriate group, followed by Germans, Dutch and Scandinavians.
