Festivals in the Algarve
The Algarve celebrates a rich cultural tradition that finds its strongest expression in the region’s many annual festivals. Most of these take place in August and September.
• Festas de Nossa Senhora da Orada is a traditional festival in
Albufeira that includes a fireworks display over the sea.
• Festa e Feira da Senhora dos Martires is a local festival and fair in
Castro Marim.
• Castro Marim also provides the stage for Dias Medievals (medieval
re-enactment).
• Faro’s Festival do Marisco da Ria Formosa celebrates the seafood of
Ria Formosa.
• Between May and July, Loule plays host to the Festival Internacional
da Musica Classica. The concert attracts leading Portuguese and
foreign artists, and represents a highlight on the region’s arts
calendar.
• Olhao hosts the Festival do Marisco (Shellfish Festival). This is one
of the biggest food events in the Algarve.
• Festival da Sardinha (Sardine Festival) takes place in Portimao. The
object is to grill as many sardines on a single grill at one time.
• Fatacil is a big handicrafts, tourism, agriculture, commerce and
industry fair. Visitors get to sample food and wine, and to watch
live music and arts performances. The venue is Lagoa.
