Day Trips from Portimao
The former fishing hamlet of Ferragudo lies 5km east of Portimao. It offers a fine beach, which is also the site of the restored 16th century Castelo de Sao Joao (St. John’s Castle). Now privately owned, the castle was originally built to defend Portimao. There are many laid-back restaurants and bars near the beach. Watersports equipment is also available to rent.
Armacao de Pera features a small 18th century fortress and a long sandy beach.
The beach village of Alvor and the inland city of Silves have fascinating historical assets and the atmosphere to match.
Portimao is surrounded by some exceptional historical sites: the Caves of Estombar, the mosaic floor of the Roman villa at Figueira and the recently restored Dolan period burial tombs at Alcalar.
