Beaches in the Algarve
The 240 km long Algarvian coastline boasts some of the finest beaches in Europe. The western end, which juts out into the Atlantic, is Portugal’s “wild” coast. The gigantic and untouched rock formations create sheer cliff faces and dramatic ocean views. The area’s must-see location is Cape St. Vincent, the most south-westerly point in Europe, and the “refreshment station” for transcontinental migratory birds.
The coastline attracts every manner of water sport. Snorkelling and scuba diving are particularly good in the west, where mammoth rock formations wait to be explored. Board- and windsurfing are also popular, while many beaches have their own harbour and anchorage facilities. Most beaches have snack bars, showers and water sports equipment for rent.
