The Place de la France is the centre of Tangier. Famous for its café culture in the first half of the 20th century, it gets very busy at night.
The Grand Socco is the city’s transportation hub. Once the chief market area, it became a gathering place for buses and taxis in the 1970s. Several cafes and stalls do, however, remain on the site.
Mendoubin Gardens is a beautifully shady rest area. Towards its centre is a small terrace with good sea views.
St. Andrew’s Church provides an outstanding example of Tangier’s international days. The architecture and interior of the 19th century building combine Arabic, Moorish and British elements in a fascinating manner.
Once the traditional residence of the sultan, the Kasbah has become a fashionable residential area.
Built in the 17th century, the Dar el Makhzen was the palace of the Kasbah. Today the building houses an interesting Moroccan art museum whose exhibits include manuscripts, traditional Fez furniture, jewellery and carpets.
The Grand Mosque is one of Tangier’s most recognizable structures. It was built in 1685 to celebrate Morocco’s return to Arab control. As such, its green and white tile minaret is appropriately striking.
The Tangier American Legation Museum is the only historic landmark of the United States that is situated abroad. It is housed in the American Embassy, itself established in 1777 when Morocco became the first nation to recognize the United States of America as an independent country.
