What to See in Marrakech

The Djemaa el Fna is the world famous market at the centre of the medina, and the heart of Marrakech. The L-shaped square is hundreds of years old and initially served as a meeting place for farmers and tradesmen. Today the square is filled with mosques, bazaars and cafes, and visitors are exposed to every conceivable form of service and entertainment, from snake charming acts to dental extractions. The square takes on a different character depending on the hour, and ought to be seen during the day, at sunset and late at night.

Once a palace, the Dar Si Said is a 19th century building that has been converted into a museum. On display is an excellent collection of antique Moroccan crafts like pottery, carpets and leatherwork.

The Ali ben Youssef Mosque is the oldest mosque in Marrakech. Originally built in the 12th century, the mosque has been destroyed and rebuilt several times.

Agdal Garden is a 3km stretch of water and greenery. Entirely enclosed by high clay walls, the garden contains vast olive, fig, citrus, apricot and pomegranate orchards. There is a large lagoon and several smaller pools, all of which are sustained by an ancient underground system of irrigation channels.

El Badi Palace is an impressive 16th century building. Its name means “The Marvel”, and it was once a royal showpiece and grand place of entertainment. Today it is a collection of sandstone ruins. The subterranean corridors and dungeons are still intact.

Another palace worth seeing is the La Bahia. Built in the 19th century, this palace was once the residence of a harem, and is still sometimes used by the royal family today. The palace has a fascinating display of ceramics, painted wood and symmetrical gardens.
