Tangier

The city of Tangier can be found on the northern coast of Morocco, lying at the western entrance to the Straight of Gibraltar where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Tangier has a population of around 670,000 people and is capital of Morocco's Tangier-Tetouan region.

Perhaps in part because of its varied and interesting history, Tangier has something of a reputation as a celebrity retreat and it has, over the ages, been home to numerous foreign writers, musicians and artists.

The city houses Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities, living alongside immigrants from other nations. Writers such as Jack Kerouac, Tennessee Williams and Brion Gysin have all lived in the city - while the rock group the Rolling Stones also once called Tangier home.

Containing an ancient and beautiful old city, tourists in Tangier can wander its narrow streets and then look out over the Straights of Gibraltar from the old Sultan's Palace in the centre.
