Morocco

The Kingdom of Morocco is a northern African country with a population of just over 33 million people.

Morocco

Situated on the Mediterranean, it has borders with Algeria to the east, Western Sahara to the south and a water border through the Strait of Gibraltar with Spain to the north.

It has Africa's fifth biggest economy, with its annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) standing at $134 billion and accounting for around six per cent of the continent's GDP. The mining of phosphates is its largest industry, while revenues earned from nationals living abroad who transfer funds to relatives at home is the second largest source of income.

It is also one of the world's largest producers of cannabis.

The country is a de jure constitutional monarchy and has an elected parliament. The King has strong executive powers, and is able to dissolve the government and deploy the military, if he so wishes.

Morocco last year celebrated the 50th anniversary of independence from France.

The climate is Meditarranean on the northern coastal belt. Inland, the weather is influenced by the high Atlas mountains - with very hot summers and heavy snow falls in mountain areas during the winter. The southern part of the country, on the fringes of the Sahara desert, is almost rainless.

Most major European airports are accessible from Agadir's airport - while routes also operate from Fez to London, Marrakech to London and Tangier to London.

You can also journey to Tangier by rail - by travelling on the Eurostar as far as Paris and then reaching the coastal town of Algeciras in southern Spain. From there you can take one-and-a-half hour ferry trip to eventually arrive in Tangier.
