Introduction to Marrakech


Marrakech is undoubtedly Morocco’s biggest tourist drawcard. Located near the centre of the country and near the foot of the High Atlas Mountains, Marrakech marks a clear distinction between north and south, Arab and Berber, small town and big city.

Marrakech is divided into three main areas. The medina is the old walled city that contains most of the city’s attractions, including its “souks” (markets). The la Ville Nouvelle (New Town) lies to the west of the medina. It houses much of the city’s tourist infrastructure: tourist agencies, boutiques, hotels, restaurants and clubs. The Palmery is a 30 000 acre area to the north of the medina. It is known to be something of a celebrity retreat.
