CONSUMERS SHRUG OFF ECONOMIC DOWNTURN
Thursday, 13 Mar 2008
Levels of spending among British holidaymakers are not likely to be affected by global economic problems, experts have stated.
A poll by market research firm TNS Travel and Tourism found that the majority of tourists from the UK will carry on as normal, despite the impact of the worldwide credit crunch, Travel Weekly reports.
This suggests that spending time abroad is a major priority for Britons and that they are not willing to make such a sacrifice, even with a possible worldwide recession on the horizon.
Tom Costley, head of travel and tourism at TNS, remarked: "The UK holiday market appears resilient in the face of the economic downturn."
His comments concur with the view of Ian Bradley from the Association of Independent Tour Operators, who recently told the Guardian that economic problems such as the credit crunch are not unduly affecting the travel industry.
According to TNS, one in four holidaymakers plan to spend a week along the Mediterranean, while one in five are booking trips to long-haul destinations.
