Italy

The Italian Republic, in southern Europe, is a country of close to 59 million people.

Italy

Home to a series of formerly influential European cultures, its capital Rome laid the foundations for western society and is a historically and culturally important global city.

The country extends over a boot-like peninsula and also contains the Po river valley and the Mediterranean's two largest islands, Sicily and Sardinia.

Italians often refer to their home nation as either lo Stivale (the Boot), il Bel Paese (the Beautiful Country), or lo Penisola (the Peninsula). The majority of the country borders the Mediterranean Sea to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east, although Italy does share northern alpine borders with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia.

It is a developed country with the globe's seventh highest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the 17th highest Human Development Index rating in the world. It is a founding member of the European Union, the Council of Europe and the Central European Initiative.

It is also a member of the G8 and a non-permanent member of the UN security council.

The country has a largely temperate climate with some regional variations. The northern parts are warm with occasional rainfall in the summer, while the centre is very humid and the south scorches under dry, sweltering conditions.

During winter, temperatures in the south are favourable, while the northern parts of the country often are afflicted with a cold, damp fog.

As a developed European country, Italy enjoys full transport links with the UK - and there are a plethora of airports available for UK travellers.
