Calabria
Calabria is the southern-most region in Italy and can be found at the 'toe' end of the Italian boot-like peninsula.
Mainly a mountainous region, Calabria is separated from the rest of the country by the barrier formed by the Pollino Mountains at its north-eastern end. Parts of the region are heavily wooded, while others contain vast wind-swept plateaus with little vegetation.
Property in Calabria is still cheap, with a beachfront one-bedroom flat going for as little as £30,000. Unknown to tourists and traditionally little-respected by Italians, the region contains many beautiful artefacts garnered from its illustrious Roman and Greek past.
The region's main city is Catanzaro, which sits on two sides of a river gorge transversed by a huge concrete and steel bridge, one of the largest in Europe. Tourists are mainly attracted to Calabria's beautiful beaches and spectacular mountains.
