TOURISM SURVIVES GREEK FOREST FIRES
Tuesday, 04 Sep 2007
The recent forest fires in Greece have not negatively affected the tourist industry, according to the country's government.
Tourism minister Fanni Palli-Petralia stated that no major resorts or tourist facilities saw any cancellations in the wake of the blazes.
She added that many had actually received extra custom during recent weeks, due to a large influx of journalists coming to the area.
Ms Petralia told the New York Times: "We're convinced that we'll close with a successful year."
The Peloponnese peninsula had been badly affected by the forest fires, which are believed to have been caused by an arsonist and claimed the lives of more than 60 people.
However, most of Greek's tourism income comes from areas that were completely unaffected, such as Crete, Rhodes and Mykonos.
According to official figures, the tourism industry generates approximately one-fifth of the country's gross domestic product and employment.
