More British tourists head for Greece

Greece is currently attracting an increased number of British holidaymakers, according to one travel firm.

Lastminute.com said the amount of bookings for next month is 15 per cent higher than it was during April 2007.

This is a positive development for the Greek tourism industry which could also benefit people affiliated with the sector.

For example, increased tourism will create more demand for temporary lodgings in tourist hotspots such as Kos and Rhodes.

This places owners of rental accommodation in line to collect higher returns on their investment.

Lastminute.com said people are choosing to head abroad next month because many schools are having a late Easter break, while the poor weather has led to many opting for warm countries such as Greece.

John Bevan, managing director of the firm, commented: "The unusually cold weather has led to incredible demand for late Easter sun holidays."

This comes after Holiday-Rentals revealed that Greece is also becoming more popular with overseas property buyers from the UK, in particular buy-to-let investors.

Property Select offers a comprehensive selection of overseas property, news, members club and reviews of the latest property developments.

Tourism survives Greek forest fires

The recent forest fires in Greece have not negatively affected the tourist industry, according to the country's government.

Tourism minister Fanni Palli-Petralia stated that no major resorts or tourist facilities saw any cancellations in the wake of the blazes.

She added that many had actually received extra custom during recent weeks, due to a large influx of journalists coming to the area.

Ms Petralia told the New York Times: "We're convinced that we'll close with a successful year."

The Peloponnese peninsula had been badly affected by the forest fires, which are believed to have been caused by an arsonist and claimed the lives of more than 60 people.

However, most of Greek's tourism income comes from areas that were completely unaffected, such as Crete, Rhodes and Mykonos.

According to official figures, the tourism industry generates approximately one-fifth of the country's gross domestic product and employment.

Property Select offers a comprehensive selection of overseas property, news, members club and reviews of the latest property developments.
