Greece

The Hellenic Republic is a country in south-east Europe with a population of around 11.125 million people.

Greece

Situated on the southern tip of the Baltic peninsula, it is bordered by Turkey to the east and Bulgaria, Albania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the north. To the west, the country has a border with the Ionian Sea, while to the east lies the Aegean Sea. Both of these seas contain a huge number of islands.

The country has a long and varied history, lying at the junction between Europe, Asia and Africa. It's heritage includes nearly four centuries of Ottoman rule, the Byzantine Empire and classical Greece.

Modern-day Greece is a developed country and has been a prominent member of the European Union since 1981. It has a capitalist economy whose main activities include tourism, banking and finance, manufacturing and construction, telecommunications and shipping industries. Gross domestic product (GDP) per capita stands at $27,360, or 93 per cent of the EU average. The country typically ranks around 20th in standards of living surveys.

In the years after World War II, the country enjoyed a period now termed as the Greek economic miracle - with growth averaging seven per cent between 1950 and 1973.

The country is currently a parliamentary republic, vesting the powers of head state in a president elected by parliament to a five-year term. The prime minister, currently Kostas Karamanlis, and cabinet play a central role in the political process while the president performs some executive and legislative duties in addition to ceremonial functions.

Greece has a typically Mediterranean climate, with mild and rainy winters and relatively warm and dry summers. It usually has extended periods of sunshine throughout the year.
