France

The French Republic is a country located in western Europe with a population of just over 64 million people.

France

It shares borders with Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Andorra and Spain. It also comprises various overseas departments and islands, including French Guiana and Saint-Martin.

The French economy is ranked as the sixth largest in the world and the country is the fifth largest exporter and fourth largest importer of manufactured goods. French companies rate highly in global terms on the amount of money they invest outside of France - and the country is also a large recipient of foreign finds.

The country suffers from high levels of unemployment, with only 68.8 per cent of the French population aged 15-64 currently working (compared to 80 per cent in Japan and 78.9 per cent in the UK). Economists say that this is because the French government provides various incentives for people to retire in their 50s and because students delay their entry into the job market for as long as possible.

France receives around 75 million tourists per year and is ranked as the number one tourist destination in the world, ahead of Spain and the United States.

The country's government is formed in a unitary semi-presidential republic with strong democratic traditions. The executive has two leaders - the President of the Republic, who is elected for a five-year term, and the government, which is lead by a prime minister appointed by the president.

Northern France has a temperate climate similar to northern England, with warm summers, cold winters and rainfall throughout the year. The south of the country has a warm Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters.
