Sights in the Red Sea Coast

The Red Sea Coast is known for its cultural heritage and historical sites.

The Ras Mohammed National Park is a place of pilgrimage of both Christians and Muslims.

St Anthony’s and the neighbouring St Paul’s are the oldest monasteries in Egypt, and observe rituals that date back 16 centuries. Situated deep in the Red Sea Mountains, they are accessible by special tours.

Founded in 356 AD, St Anthony’s is a self-contained village complete with a bakery, a mill, five churches and an impressive library. St Anthony’s Cave, where the saint lived as a hermit, is 2 km from the monastery and 680 metres above the Red Sea. It gives spectacular views of the mountains and sea.

St Paul’s monastery has three churches. The Church of St Paul was originally dug into the cave where the saint lived and where his remains are kept. The monastery has had few alterations, and its ancient heritage has been well preserved.

Mons Claudianus was a Roman colony of substance, where Quartzy diorite, a high quality granite, was mined for use in the Roman Empire. To see here is a Roman camp, dwellings, a workshop and stables. The camp is surrounded by thick defensive granite walls. There are also hot springs, once used in a complex underground heating system. Mons Claudianus is located about 30 miles from Port Safaga, just off the Qena Road.
