CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO TOURISM

Boosting tourism in Cyprus is still a major priority for the country's government, according to its president.

Tassos Papadopoulos said that establishing the island as a major holiday destination was one of its overriding concerns, reports the Financial Mirror.

Speaking at this year's general assembly of the Cyprus Tourism Business Association, he highlighted several of the measures that were currently being carried out.

For example, he said the government was partway through a strategy that was aiming to yield results by 2010.

President Papadopoulos added that the Mediterranean island was also being heavily promoted overseas.

However, he urged the whole tourist sector to contribute in marketing the country to foreign consumers.

The comments follow the release of official figures cited by the Financial Mirror showing that revenue from tourism reached £1.4 billion last year.

This is 5.9 per cent higher than the figure recorded in 2006.
