Efforts to market Cyprus as a holiday destination are to be stepped by authorities on the island, according to a local newspaper.

The Financial Mirror has revealed that the Cyprus Tourist Organisation (CTO) has enlisted celebrity help in promoting the country overseas.

Top tennis player and Cypriot national Marcos Baghdatis will be the face the new campaign which has been designed to attract more foreign tourists.

Since the former Wimbledon semi-finalist is a well-known personality across the world, the CTO believes he could be noticed by many potential visitors.

Baghdatis' face will be used on all the campaign literature and advertisements, which will be both online and in print publications.

In addition, he will personally attend numerous travel fairs and similar events across the world.

This comes after football manager Jose Mourinho was involved in a campaign by Portuguese tourist authorities.

The former Chelsea and Porto boss participated in a publicity drive for the Algarve region.
