Aphrodite was born in Paphos and Paphos town is believed to have been founded by her son in 1400 BC.
In 1200 BC Paphos was occupied by the Myceneans who paid homage to Aphrodite and other such gods and goddesses, and who built monuments and temples in their honour.
The port of Paphos was built by the last king of Paphos, Nicocles. It grew and thrived under Alexander the Great. Paphos remained under Roman control for almost seven centuries, during which time it flourished and was declared the capital of Cyprus.
With the emergence in the Middle Ages of new, larger cities of financial and religious importance, Paphos lost its status and gradually faded away. By the late 20th century, however, Paphos had undergone a clear turnabout: the many archaeological treasures of the place had been rediscovered, tourism was growing at a heady pace and Paphos International Airport was built. In the wake of this renewed activity, Paphos regained its capital city status, was declared a World Heritage Site and continues to prosper today.
