Cyprus

The Republic of Cyprus is an island in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea with a population of approximately 855,000 people.

Cyprus

Located south of Turkey, Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and one of its most popular tourist destinations, attracting 2.4 million tourists per year.

The internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus has de jure sovereignty over the islands of Cyprus and its waters - but the land mass is in fact divided into four sectors. The Republic of Cyprus governs the southern portion of the island, while Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots control a third of the country in the north - the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The United Nations controls the Green Line, which separates the two states - while the United Kingdom has control of two sovereign base areas.

Cyprus gained independence from Great Britain in 1961. In the period that followed, violence escalated between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, until Turkey invaded and occupied one-third of the island in 1974. The resulting political situation is a matter of ongoing dispute.

Cyprus is a prosperous nation and its economy has diversified in recent times, so much so that it is now considered a basis for several offshore companies. The services sector dominates in both sides of the island - although oil has been recently discovered in the seabed lying between Cypus and Egypt.

Cyprus enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with long, dry summers and short, mild winters. The islands are typically bathed in sunshine for most of the year.

The island is easily accessible from the UK, with flights leaving from the most major British gateways.
