Cape Verde

The Republic of Cape Verde is an archipelago located in the North Atlantic Ocean, several hundred miles off the coast of West Africa.

Cape Verde

Consisting of ten islands and eight smaller islets, the archipelago has a population of around 421,000 people. Only one of the main islands and five of the islets are unpopulated.

Cape Verde was uninhabited when the first Portuguese settlers arrived in 1456 and made the islands part of the Portuguese empire. Over the centuries it has acted as an important watering station, sugar cane plantation site and then a major centre for the slave trade.

The archipelago has enjoyed significant economic growth in the services industry since the late 1990's and is now considered a country of average development. Agriculture takes place on only four of the islands, and is made difficult by a lack of rain. Cape Verde enjoys cooperation with Portugal at every level of its economy and links its currency with the Euro.

Recently, former Portuguese president Mario Soares launched a petition urging the European Union to instigate membership talks with Cape Verde.

The island's inhabitants are mesticos, mixed-race descendants of enslaved Africans and white Portuguese settlers. Mesticos' bloodlines also emanate from Spanish and Italian seamen granted land on the islands by the Portuguese Empire and Portuguese Jews fleeing the inquisition.

The archipelago enjoys a subtropical climate with average temperatures ranging from a low of 24 degrees Celsius to 29 degrees Celsius. The average annual rainfall for Cape Verde is 68.4 millimetres.

Air Portugal operates daily flights from London to Cape Verde, via Lisbon. Cape Verde Airlines runs flights from Paris, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Madrid, Milan and Munich direct to the archipelago, with connecting fares from most UK airports.
