Brazil

The Federative Republic of Brazil is the largest country in South America, with a population of just over 188 million people.

Brazil

Covering a huge tract of land between central South America and the Atlantic Ocean, it shares borders with Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana to the north, Colombia to the north-west, Bolivia and Peru to the west, Argentina and Paraguay to the south-west and Uruguay to the south.

Depending on the source, Brazil is generally considered either the ninth or tenth largest economy in the world. It has large and well-developed agricultural, mining, manufacturing and service sectors. Its gross domestic product (GDP) is larger than that in any other South American country.

The country has been growing its presence in international financial and commodities markets and, along with Russia, India and China, is considered one of the world's rising economical stars.

Brazil is governed under a presidential system, with the president elected as head of state and head of government. The president then appoints the ministers of state and is assisted by them. Deputies are elected to the National Congress, the Union's legislative, every year.

Brazil's administration faces numerous difficulties in the years ahead - as public institutions are widely recognised as being inefficient, with poorly paid and prepared personnel. A lack of infrastructure, bureaucracy and widespread corruption are also commonly cited as problems in Brazilian public affairs.

The country has five climatic regions - equatorial, tropical, semi-arid, highland tropical and subtropical. The cities of Sao Paulo and Brasilia on the plateau enjoy mild temperatures year-round, while Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Natal and Salvador on the coast have warmer climates.

The range of direct flights from the UK to Brazil is fairly limited - with British Airways and Brazilian national airline Varig offering flights from London to Sao Paulo non-stop. If you wish to travel to Rio de Janeiro or any of the country's other cities, you must catch a connecting flight from Sao Paulo.
